Frequently Asked Questions

  • Nanaimo Municipal Elections will be held on October 17th, 2026.

    Early voting will be available on October 7th and 14th.

    Unlike provincial and federal elections, there are no assigned voting locations for local government elections and you can cast your vote at the voting location of your choosing.

    🗳️Advance voting will be available at Beban Park Social Centre, 2300 Bowen Road, on:

    • Wednesday, October 7 from 8:00 am-8:00 pm

    • Wednesday, October 14 from 8:00 am-8:00 pm

     🗳️ Vote on Election Day: October 17, 2026

    General Voting Day happens on Saturday, October 17 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. 

    You can vote at any of the following 11 locations:

    • Beban Park Social Centre, 2300 Bowen Road

    • Brechin Elementary School, 510 Millstone Avenue

    • Chase River Elementary School, 1503 Cranberry Avenue

    • City of Nanaimo Service and Resource Centre, 411 Dunsmuir Street

    • Dover Bay Secondary School, 6135 McGirr Road

    • John Barsby Secondary School, 550 Seventh Street

    • Nanaimo District Secondary School, 355 Wakesiah Avenue

    • Protection Island Fire Hall, 26 Pirates Lane (10:00 am to 6:00 pm only)

    • Randerson Ridge Elementary School, 6021 Nelson Road

    • Uplands Park Elementary School, 3821 Stronach Drive

    • Wellington Secondary School, 3135 Mexicana Road

    Vote by mail:

    You can choose to vote by mail ballot instead of voting in person. Ballots must be received by the Chief Election Officer by 8:00 pm on October 17, 2026.

    To request a mail ballot, you will need to submit an Application to Vote By Mail. Vote by mail applications are available beginning September 1 at 9:00 a.m. until October 16 at 4:00 p.m. Applications are available for pick-up at the Legislative Services Office located on the first floor of City Hall (455 Wallace Street), or can be downloaded online. 

    Completed application forms can be returned:

  • In order to vote in the City of Nanaimo municipal election, you need to be at least 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, and a BC resident for at least the last six (6) months.

  • Unfortunately, no. I appreciate that you want to share your support and vote for me, but in order to vote for Mayor and City Council, you must be a resident of Nanaimo OR own property in the city of Nanaimo.

  • Yes!

    Nanaimo’s municipal boundary was extended to include Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) reserves IRs 1, 2, 3 and 4 effective July 17, 2026. With this change, residents of SFN who live on these reserves are now eligible to vote for the City of Nanaimo’s Mayor and Council, provided they meet the other requirements for voter eligibility.
